Staff Spotlight: Theresa Russell, LMFT – Therapist

Today we’re highlighting Theresa Russell, LMFT, one of the exceptional therapists at BrightQuest San Diego! Learn more about Theresa, what drew her to the mental health field, and more in this Q&A.
What drew you to this field?
I had a therapist when I was younger that made a huge impact on me. I learned so much about myself and it changed my life! This created the desire to support others in the same way.
Why are you passionate about helping people with complex mental illnesses?
I think of symptoms as a disconnection from self. Helping people to reconnect to themselves creates a sense of purpose. It is beautiful to witness the stages of reconnection and the range of insights that come with that.
What modalities do you use when working with clients? Do you have a favorite and why?
My favorite modality is Somatic Experiencing, which helps people gently process the “stuckness” that often accompanies trauma. It involves noticing emotions and bodily sensations to support healing and invite curiosity. Rather than aiming for a specific destination, it encourages open, nonjudgmental self-exploration.
What do you wish more people knew about your profession?
That a therapist’s job is not to “fix” someone. It is to hold space for them to learn about themselves and create new patterning.
What makes you excited to be a part of the BrightQuest family?
The community aspect! Having the space to get to know each other for extended periods of time while seeing everyone grow – both staff and clients.
